Organized in
1974, Fort Bend Seniors is one of Fort Bend
County’s oldest non-profit organizations and was
born out of a grass roots effort by community
leaders. In the early 70’s, the Fort Bend County
Commissioners Court recognized a growing need in
the community: the need to provide seniors with
hot, regular meals. The Commissioners organized
the effort under the Older Americans’ Act of
1965 and during their first year of service,
they provided 20,000 hot meals to 85 seniors
from one site location.
By
1976, the program became a non-profit
organization entitled Fort Bend Senior Citizens,
Inc. and established a volunteer Board of
Directors. In 1981, Fort Bend Seniors joined the
United Way of Texas Gulf Coast. Nine years
later, Fort Bend Seniors had made substantial
progress by providing even more meals and
services to area seniors. Due to their success,
in 1990 the Houston-Galveston Area Council Area
Agency on Aging asked Fort Bend Senior Citizens,
Inc. to expand their service area by taking over
the management of the senior program in Waller
County.
Through the
years, Fort Bend Seniors has evolved and now
provides Meals on Wheels services to over 800
seniors daily from seven site locations throughout
Fort Bend County and one site in Waller County.
Fort Bend Seniors is the only organization that
provides Meals on Wheels to all persons over 60
years of age regardless of income. Client
statistics have shown that 85% of Fort Bend
Seniors’ clients live at or below the poverty
level.
In 2004, the Fort
Bend Seniors received official certification by
the Meals on Wheels Association of America. This
accreditation insures that the Fort Bend
Seniors’ Meals on Wheels program is a certified
nutrition program meeting the nutritional
standards set forth by the national
organization.
Today,
FBS provides comprehensive services and programs
including Meals on Wheels, congregate meals,
transportation, homemaker assistance, case
management, health screenings, information and
referral services, recreation and more. Each of
these programs and services enable area seniors
to remain in their homes and continue to be an
integral part of the community for as long as
possible.
In
2005, the 31-year-old organization changed its
name and logo to create an identity that would
both grow with them as they continue to expand
their services, as well as more closely
associate the organization’s primary service
with their name. The new identity, Fort Bend
Seniors – Meals on Wheels and Much, Much More!
was unveiled to the community in a ceremony
attended by community leaders, board members,
staff and area seniors. With this transition,
Fort Bend Seniors looks forward to the next
thirty years of helping seniors remain
independent by providing necessary services and
resources to improve their quality of life.
